  • Police Urge Public To Speak-Up through Crime-Line

Launching ‘Operation Speak-up’, a week-long anti-crime clampdown linked to Primedia’s Crime Line, Gauteng Police Commissioner, Perumal Naidoo, said: “The public must break their silence and speak-up. These criminals must be exposed and arrested and we appeal to the public to come forward with information.”

“The SAPS needs intelligence from the public because they are our eyes and ears. If you know of anyone involved in any wrongdoing, now is the time to speak-up by using the Crime Line anonymous tip-off service,” said Naidoo.

‘Operation Speak-up’ is aimed at gathering and acting on information ranging from those involved in drugs, ATM bombings, hijackings, robberies, fraud to sexual crimes, stolen and counterfeit goods and other crimes,” he added.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said special SAPS teams throughout the province will analyise and act on the tip-offs. “We are ready and the community must now SMS Crime Line on 32211 (at a cost of a rand) or go to www.crimeline.co.za with their tip-offs about those involved in crime.”

Mariemuthoo appealed for detailed information. “Please ensure that you provide full information when passing on a tip-off. We need names, addresses, descriptions, vehicle registration numbers if applicable, the offence being committed, etc. It’s vital you detail who, what, where, when, why and how.”

“People cannot protect criminals any longer. Crime Line guarantees anonymity and now is the time to use it,” Mariemuthoo added.

He said the focus was also on wanted criminals. Police also appealed for information on three men who are part of the notorious “Hammer Gang.” Noel Sibanda, Richard Dube and Lindizwe Mkhize escaped from the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 5 May. They are allegedly part of a gang responsible for a string of bank robberies across the country. The men are regarded as dangerous.

“If you know their wherabouts, please let Crime Line know,” said Mariemuthoo.

Over 440 suspected criminals have been arrested since the launch of Crime Line in June last year. Almost R20-million of stolen property, drugs and counterfeit goods have been seized.

Primedia’s Crime Line head, Yusuf Abramjee, said: “We appeal to the public to make use of ‘Operation Speak-up’. You can contribute to a safer South Africa by simply sending an SMS to 32211 or going to the Crime Line website. This tip-off service is working….use it!”

“We provide the information to the SAPS on a real-time basis. Crime Line is not an emergency line – it is for crime intelligence. Someone out there knows of wrongdoing being committed and who the wrongdoers are. Please speak-up.

“We are confident that the public will use this special blitz and blow the whistle. It is our civic and moral duty to tip the authorities off…It’s one mission, one objective, one SMS!” Abramjee added.
